Search engines

Task:
Create a presentation targeting the generation 70+
about the use of a search engine, using google
assume they know clicking in a browser to follow liks, etc.

Tell them about searching for
one keyword – a number of keywords (lose sequence)
a phrase (keywords in fixed sequence)
a word in a particular language
a word on a particular domain

How can words be excluded from a search
I wouldn’t use a presentation to explain how to use a search engine for the generation 70+. I would show them how to do that on a computer ( HYPERLINK "http://www.google.com" www.google.com) and after that they should try it on their own. I would help them while they are doing that.

- one keyword: type in the word and click on ‘search’.
- a number of keywords: type in more words with using one blank in between them
- a phrase: use quotation marks
- a word in a particular language: click on ‘advanced search’, select a language and type in the word you are searching for in the field ‘advanced search’
- a word on a particular domain: click on ‘advanced search’, type in a word in the field ‘advanced search’, use the domain filter by typing in a webaddress and decide if you want to search only on this site or search without this site.
- words excluded: use – before the word you want to exclude

Systematik

Task:
Find the so called ‘Systematik’ of the library. What is it and how do you find a book using the ‘Systematik’? Look at the page ‘erweiterete Suche’ or ‘Bibliothekskatalog’ and see if you can find it.

A ‘Systematik’ shows the structure of science fields and the relations between such science fields. The science fields (subjects) are structured in more detailed terms which are also structured in more detailed terms. If you find the term or topic you are looking for, all books are listed about this topic which are located in the library. For example the subject ‘Anglistik’/‘Amerikanistik’ is structured into different terms like ‘Englische Literatur allgemein’, ‘Keltische Literaturen’, ‘Englische Literatur des Mittelalters insgesamt’,…

If you want to find ‘Hamlet’ by Shakespeare: click on ‘Anglistik’/’Amerikanistik’, ‘Englische Literatur der Renaissance und Shakespearezeit (1500-1640), ‘Englische Literatur der Renaissance und Shakespearezeit (1500-1640): Autoren’, ‘Shakespeare, William: Einzelwerke’, ‘6 Documente’. There you find a list of books including Hamlet by Shakespeare.
